Photography II Black and White

In this course students work on building a quarter-long project to gain deeper insight and a stronger grasp of practices in contemporary black and white photography. Students investigate ideas through multiple modes of image-making, utilizing collage, found imagery and conceptual prompts, as well as embracing unexpected uses of the lens. Instruction in the course is driven by the importance of developing one's identity as an artist and cultivating the expansiveness of the photographic meduim. Concurrent to individual projects, students review foundational analog photography skills through accessible software that stimulates the darkroom and manual camera techniques. Phone and computer software (Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop) are used alongside familiar yet essential analog tools in a process geared toward integrating digital and analog ways of representation and ehancing joint expressive properties. The work done throughout the quarter culminates in a final portfolio.

The Portable Studio

Using the concept behind the Post-Studio art practice as a starting point, this course explores what it means to make art outside (in a landscape/cityscape, etc.) instead of inside the traditional Art Studio. With technology and equipment getting smaller and more handy and with the endless stream of apps and functions available on cell phones and other mobile devices, this course furthermore investigates how this gives the artist the ability to work on the fly and produce most of their artwork on site. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this course, the students are given 3 assignments throughout this course, where they are introduced to sound, video, photography, and performance art. The goal of this course is to challenge students to think differently about the use of their mobile devices and tablets and to be creative and experimental on the spot.

AP Studio Art

The AP Art and Design course framework is composed of course skills, big ideas, essential questions and enduring understandings, learning objectives, and essential knowledge. AP Art and Design skill categories delineate overarching understandings central to the study and practice of art and design. Each of the three skill categories consists of skills that encompass foundational to advanced learning over the span of the course. Students need to develop, practice, and apply these skills in a variety of contexts. The AP Drawing course framework is made up of three big ideas. Big Idea 1: Investigate materials, processes, and ideas. Big Idea 2: Make art and design. Big Idea 3: Present art and design. The AP Art and Design framework included in the course and exam description outlines distinct skills that students should practice throughout the year—skills that will help them learn to think and act like artists.
